THE OLOID

The oloid is a compelling form to work with. The movement it creates feels graceful and calm — a serenity in its shape, a shape that never loses its equilibrium. This is what makes the oloid such a rich source of inspiration.

The oloid was invented by Swiss engineer Paul Schatz in 1929. A lecture by Rudolf Steiner on the connections between the universe, geometry, and the golden ratio had inspired him. Schatz explored what he called the “realm of movement” and, through a movable cube — the ‘invertible cube’ — developed the Turbula, a machine for more effective mixing and water purification. By tracing the line of motion it creates and fixing that motion in form, Schatz arrived at the shape of the oloid.

This effectiveness comes from a better balance between centrifugal and centripetal forces: the outward and inward movements generated by its unique geometry.
